Understanding Eligibility for Adult Children’s Benefits
Social Security adult child benefits are available to adults whose parents are eligible for Social Security disability insurance benefits, have died, or are on Social Security Retirement. To be eligible, you must have become disabled before the age of 22.
While many adult child benefits end up going to people with developmental disabilities, they are available to anyone with any type of disability who meets the basic criteria.
The theory behind adult child benefits is that if you are never able to build up a work record due to a disability that begins at a very young age, your parents’ contributions to the Social Security system should entitle you to insurance coverage.
